Sun’s Kitchen – Ikebukuro – Budget Restaurant in Japan

Do you know where you can eat a budget 500yen(around US$5!!) lunch in Japan except Gyudon restaurants like Yoshinoya? It’s a school canteen or employee canteen!!  You can find easily a school canteen. So, I’d like to introduce an employee canteen, Sun’s Kitchen(Sun’s キッチン), where non-employees can use as well. This restaurant is on the 6th floor in a skyscraper named Sunshine 60 which covers lots of amusement, such as observatory, aquarium, planetarium and indoor theme park named « Namco Namja Town« . Including me, there must be countless people who don’t want to spend money on food This restaurant meets such a need!!

Feature
Needless to say, you have to carry and clean your tray by yourself.
It helps this restaurant cut their staff cost. In return for this, you can save your money. Generally, you pay first at a canteen. But, you pay after at this canteen. When I visited this canteen first, I was totally confused. How and where can I pay? There are some unattended checkout counters where you put your tray and scan your Suica Card which is an electronic money card and very useful nationwide, such as shopping and transportation. Keep in mind that this restaurant accepts only Suica Card for payment. No cash, No credit card. Here is a link(The JapanGuy.com) for Getting a Suica Card and Recharging a Suica Card.

My Opinion
The greatest merit of this restaurant is that you don’t need to wait. The amount of food is for lady. It’s much healthier than Gyudon. I have never tried, but in my view, you can linger at this restaurant all day. No staff at the dining hall and you can drink green tea as much as you can.

  1. That card has been a problem for me when I was there. 😀
Such a neat thing for an employee canteen to be open for public. And yes, all around Okinawa is relatively cheap! The sushi, the ramen, the rice meals, all cheap! I like Sukiya. Although they don’t except debit/credit cards.

  2. what a great idea and the food looks like it comes from a very expensive restaurant. it’s wonderful to have unlimited green tea…very healthy.

    • Hi, Sun! Ahh, every restaurant serves unlimited green tea or roasted barley tea or water for free in Japan. The difference is whether staffs serve or not.
