Sakusaku(さくさく) – Road to Perfect Tendon(天丼)/Tempura Bowl, Center Kita, Japan

This is the second round of road to perfect Tendon(天丼)/Tempura Bowl. Click Here to the first round, Hachimaki(はちまき)Perfect Tempura should be Crispy Tempura. Perfect Tempura is a really tough work. This is because Tempura sauce makes Tempura soggy.  Tempura sauce is Achilles’ heel and a chance to show off professional skill.

Feature
I couldn’t find Sakusaku right away. Sakusaku is over this Ferris Wheel which is on the roof of a department store. Sakusaku is popular among local people. In my case, I waited outside for 10 minutes or so. There are counter seats on the near side of the entrance and tables seats on the far side. The inside is clean and suitable bright to read a book. The kitchen is in front of counter seats where you can see how a chef cooks. The chef looks young and amiable. He does all cooking work. He cook customers’ orders one by one. You need to wait for around 30 minutes before having a fun with Tempura. The specialty is a half-boiled yolk Tempura. The inside is creamy.

Behold this big conger eel! Both sides are out of the bowl.

My  Opinion
Sakusaku means crispy. I hold up my hope. But, it’s a bit soggy. Little bit of letdown. The chef dips Tempura into Tempura sauce. So, Sakusaku Tempura is less soggier than Hachimaki TempuraSakusaku serves a generous portion of food. Especially, a conger eel sticks out of a bowl!! You can change rice size from regular to large for free. Tempura is so big that I want more rice than large. Pumpkin Tempura is a bit tough. I love a tender one. But, it depends on individuals. I can say it’s affordable and worth visiting!! Plus, if you choose a Tempura set menu, this restaurant will serve you with perfect Tempura. I’d like to have a Tempura set menu here next time.

  1. that’s funny… »a conger eel sticks out of a bowl… » and a nice service allowing a customer to upgrade from regular to large bowl of rice for free. that is wonderful. 🙂
